the Author:
Richard Oxtoby was born in Durban and educated initially at the University of Natal. Graduating from there with a B.Sc Honours degree in Psychology (Cum Laude), he spent five years as a professional musician (working mainly in the field of Western Renaissance and Baroque music), before returning to the field of Psychology. He obtained an M.Sc (Cum Laude) and Ph.D from the University of Cape Town, where he spent more than thirty years on the academic staff. During that time he acquired qualifications as both an Industrial and a Clinical Psychologist. Before joining the permanent staff of UCT he spent a couple of years as Director of the Durban-based International Arts League of Youth, followed by 5 years as MD of a music publishing company. During his time on the permanent staff of the Department of Psychology at UCT he was also a visiting lecturer at both the UCT and Stellenbosch University Business Schools, and ran a small clinical practice, which eventually developed predominantly into a consultancy service to business. Taking early retirement from Academia at the end of 1999, he has since then been active mostly as a corporate psychologist, increasingly specialising in the area of Executive Coaching. Past and present clients include Avis, BP (Africa), Cambridge University Press, Independent Newspapers, Martin and East, Old Mutual, Oxford University Press, Pick ‘n Pay, Reinsurance Group of America, Safmarine, Sanlam Investment Management, Stewart Scott International, The Biovac Institute, The Western Cape Treasury and Woolworths.
He is the author of six books on various psychological and business topics, and together with Dr R.G.A. Boland (founder and former Director of the UCT Graduate School of Business), of five on various aspects of Accounting and Marketing.
