About the Book:
Executive Coaching is about helping leaders in any organisation in any walk of life to attain ever-higher standards of excellence in their work, and in their lives outside work. It is about helping them, no matter how successful they may be, to explore even more effective ways of behaving – to see more options for future action, and to choose between those options with even greater wisdom than they have in the past. It is about helping clients to release whatever blocks may exist to their succeeding in “doing things differently, doing things better”.

In this book, leading Cape Town psychologist Dr Richard Oxtoby outlines an approach to coaching grounded in some particularly important principles of Psychology, which engages with the deep structures determining patterns of client behaviour.

About the Author:
Richard Oxtoby was born in Durban and educated initially at the University of Natal. Graduating from there with a B.Sc Honours degree in Psychology (Cum Laude), he spent five years as a professional musician (working mainly in the field of Western Renaissance and Baroque music), before returning to the field of Psychology. He obtained an M.Sc (Cum Laude) and Ph.D from the University of Cape Town, where he spent more than thirty years on the academic staff. During that time he acquired qualifications as both an Industrial and a Clinical Psychologist. Before joining the permanent staff of UCT he spent a couple of years as Director of the Durban-based International Arts League of Youth, followed by 5 years as MD of a music publishing company. During his time on the permanent staff of the Department of Psychology at UCT he was also a visiting lecturer at both the UCT and Stellenbosch University Business Schools, and ran a small clinical practice, which eventually developed predominantly into a consultancy service to business. Taking early retirement from Academia at the end of 1999, he has since then been active mostly as a corporate psychologist, increasingly specialising in the area of Executive Coaching. Past and present clients include Avis, BP (Africa), Cambridge University Press, Independent Newspapers, Martin and East, Old Mutual, Oxford University Press, Pick ‘n Pay, Reinsurance Group of America, Safmarine, Sanlam Investment Management, Stewart Scott International, The Biovac Institute, The Western Cape Treasury and Woolworths.

He is the author of six books on various psychological and business topics, and together with Dr R.G.A. Boland (founder and former Director of the UCT Graduate School of Business), of five on various aspects of Accounting and Marketing. More information about him and his work can be found on his website, www.richardoxtoby.co.za.
