About the Book:
Passionate about swimming since she was a small child, Laura Sevenus swam competitively at provincial level and toured South Africa with the American Water Follies synchronised swimming team. With three children who gained their swimming colours, her life has been dedicated to sharing the benefits and pleasures of her profession.

She has worked with a Springbok (international) swimming coach and opened her first swimming school in Paarl, South Africa in 1967. She pioneered the BabySwim method in South Africa, and was involved in helping to establish a swimming teachers and coaches’ qualification in the Western Province, South Africa.

Today, she runs a large swimming school in Camps Bay, Cape Town which she established in 1976. She started teaching in the United Kingdom in 1997, and has conducted workshops both there and in Sweden. Together with her daughter Kirsten, she launched a swimming school in London in 2000. She has travelled internationally to gain qualifications in aquarobics, aquatherapy and Watsu®.

A member of the South African Swimming Teachers and Coaches Association, as well as the Institute of Swimming Teachers and Coaches, UK (Great Britain), she believes swimming is an essential life skill – especially as it is a natural ability inherent in everyone. Her mission is to teach children to honour this gift so that it can bring years of joy and pleasure.

Practically Swimming: Philosophy (Behind the Method):
If any single feature differentiates LSST (Laura Sevenus Swimming Tuition) from their competition, it is the unique methods developed by Laura and Kirsten for managing the expectations and results of the entire parent/pupil experience. Laura’s forty years of dedication to the profession lend credence to her passion for this subject. It is this passion that sets the school apart.

In Laura’s own words, “I believe swimming to be an essential life skill that no one should be denied, especially given that it is a natural ability inherent in everyone. When a conducive and safe environment is provided and a child is left to explore, their innate response to swim is naturally awakened. This can be achieved in a spirit of fun without imposing limitations. We simply provide disciplined guidance and encourage safe practice. The teacher needs to ‘just be there’ to attentively follow as the student shows what they can do. We delight with them as this process unfolds. As they achieve success we encourage them to honour and hone this gift that will bring years of joy and pleasure.”

About the Teaching Method:
‘The difference between our way of teaching and that of the conventional establishment is that we follow the student and only facilitate in helping them to develop their own natural ability. By not leading or forcing the pace in any obvious way, the child (or adult) does not feel limited or constrained and is able to swim very quickly. They intuitively release their skills and abilities without interference, only surveillance. The confidence derived from knowing that “I did it” builds and supports the learning experience. Self confidence acquired in this way is immeasurable, particularly at toddler age when other learning processes tend to be much more highly structured.’

‘Laura Sevenus is a legend. She has taught generation after generation of children to swim, but more than that she has encouraged them to love the water and (to) respect it. Her unique methods encourage children to overcome fear and diffidence and to become completely confident in water. She is a visionary teacher - one who has, over the years perfected a teaching method, which is proven and unique. The proof of her success, if it is needed, is in happy children who leap joyously and swim strongly and the parents who watch with confidence.’
