Milo was a Jack Russell who belonged to a fiery-tempered, rogue environ-mental crime investigator. This is her story about her relationship with her master. Although fictitious, it is largely based on factual events and follows her adventures across the beautiful Eastern Cape province of South Africa, often as a silent passenger on the seat of her master’s bakkie. The story does not only show the unconditional love of a dog for her master, but also gives a realistic account of the war being waged against rhino poachers and its effect on rhino populations, and on the lives of the people who protect the species.
I’m cogitating on why the culture of this lovely work feels so important for socialisation, identity and life lessons for all Eastern Cape Africans.’ – MIKE LOEWE, Daily Dispatch
‘Beautifully captures the essence of the Eastern Cape – from the colourful language to the vivid descriptions of the bush.’ – ANDREW STONE, Archant
‘It should be a school set work book.’ – DAVE McGREGOR, Hawks
‘May there be many more dogs like Milo to assist in fighting the cause of conservation.’ – MATTHEW NORVAL, Wilderness Foundation Africa
‘Wildlife crime, rhino poaching, family life, country cricket, rogue taxis, snakes, abakwetha and other tales illuminate the diversity, the rough edges and the beauty of the Eastern Cape.’ – GUY ROGERS, The Herald
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Following military service as an infantry officer in the bush war of Namibia and Angola, Div de Villiers began a career as a professional conservationist in 1983. Although he hankered to get back to the bush as a game ranger, his first task was to be a law enforcement officer, tackling poachers and smugglers of wildlife and protected plants. Almost 35 years later he is still at it. Many of his successes, failures and adventures have been recorded as stories and articles, and he himself has become a well-known writer.
