PRINT ON DEMAND - CHANGING THE FACE OF PUBLISHING Print on demand (POD) is a printing technology that allows a complete book to be printed and bound in a matter of days. This makes it easy and cost-effective to produce books one or two at a time or in small lots, rather than in large print runs of a thousand or more. The independent publishers use it as a more economical publishing model. The fee-based POD publishing service provides the author with a service that's similar - but not identical - to self-publishing. Print-on-demand is not a brand new technology; it's merely a technology, used in different ways by different publishers to accomplish a variety of goals. Traditional publishers have always relied on print runs and take an educated guess as to how many copies they are likely to sell, warehouse them and hope their guess is reasonably accurate. Once a print run is finished the publisher then makes a decision to commission another, but eventually of course a book goes 'out of print' and is no longer available. Since the average shelf life of a book title is about nine months, an author would probably see years of hard work just disappear. 'Print on Demand' means a book run can be as low as a single copy, doing away with guess work and warehousing. Risks and cost elements are vastly reduced, allowing more titles to be printed. It is already the fastest growing section of the printing industry in Europe and has revolutionized the publishing business, making it affordable to a large number of up-and-coming authors. Your book will be made available to order immediately on the New Voices Publishing web-based bookstore with notices going to various big bookstores. |
